My Safety Net

Recently I have been meditating on Psalm 119: 9-16 and on the word "Safety Net". My understanding it's meaning is that it is like a guarantee of safety. As a Christian living in the 21st century … I need a safety net; I need some kind of daily guarantee that my life will be one that honors God and keeps me out of trouble.

In Psalm 119 I have found my safety net, I have found my guarantee.
Verses 9 identifies the safety net. It is called "Living by the Word of God". Verses 10 through 16 lay out the five cords that form the net.
Cord number 1 is "Seek God with all of our heart".
Cord number 2 is "Hide the Word in our hearts".
Cord number 3 is "Keep the praise of God on our lips".
Cord number 4 is "Meditate on the promises and commands of God." And cord number 5 is "delighting ourselves in God's service, presence, and laws."

This safety net never fails. This doesn't mean that I have never fallen down. I've had my share of bruises and I am sure that I will enounter even more. But when I fall, it is usually because I have failed to take advantage of the net. Maybe because the "safety net" is so simple to use ... that too often I take it for granted or assume it to be in place even when I have made very little effort to keep the net strong. The net - the Word of God - is in a way like a natural net, it has to be maintained in order to be kept strong. But unlike a natural net, God's Word is my only true guarantee of safety.

How shall a young man [and woman] cleanse his [her] way? By taking heed and keeping watch according to Your Word. Psalm 119: 9
