The Right Lane

Sometimes change happens. LOL, now that is an understatement if ever there was one! Change is a part of the natural cycle of life. At times, change is planned. But, more often than not, change happens at the  inconvenient  time and when we least expect it to happen.

Recently, while driving down the highway, I had a good illustration of change of another sort. While driving I was quickly gaining on a car that was going too slow (no, really it was going too slow) in the right-hand lane. I sped up and passed on the left. Getting into the left lane was the right move and I didn't even have to go over the speed limit to pass the car moving too slow. But, as I passed the car I noticed a sign on the side of the road that reminded me that the left lane was for passing only. The correct lane for going some distance was the right lane. So, what does this have to do with change? So glad you asked.

Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where we need to move. To stay in the lane we are in (ministry, work, education track) is to go too slow or to no longer work at our full potential. We need to switch lanes in order to get farther down the road God has planned for us. A friend of mine recently had this experience with her role in ministry. She had been doing good work and was a leader, but it was becoming clear that she needed a lane change. Changing lanes can be difficult. Others often do not understand. Such was the case with my friend. People wanted her to stay and continue doing what she had always done, but she was quick to tell people that sometimes the only way you can grow is to do switch lanes for a season . For her, switching lanes meant leaving her leadership role in her church. She is in the passing lane ... with God at the controls.

Being in right lane -- in ministry, in education, in work -- means accepting the fact that sometimes change happens ... sometimes by our own desire, but sometimes it is by God's taking the wheel. If you feel you are in the wrong lane, seek the face of God and the counsel of a wise and trusted friend. If it is God leading the change ... switch lanes and whatch wher God leads you.

May you be able to discern the leading of the Spirit in all you do.
